EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An affiliate of the Two Six street gang is admitting his role in an 11-year-old East Chicago murder, the Post-Tribune is reporting.

According to a plea agreement filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Hammond, Oscar Cosme, 41, of East Chicago, will plead guilty to one count of murder resulting from the use of a gun during a violent crime or drug trafficking.

In exchange, federal attorneys have agreed to make a binding request that Cosme be sentenced to no more than 30 years in prison. If a judge were to not accept that, then Cosme would be allowed to revoke his guilty plea.

The charge comes with up to life in prison.

Cosme was charged a year ago for his role in the shooting death of Julio Cartagena in May 2003. According to court records, Cosme and three other men — Kiontay Pennington, Adron Tancil and Louis Henderson — were trying to kidnap Cartagena because one of the local Two Six leaders, Jesus Valentine Fuentes, believed Cartagena, a fellow Two Six member, stole about 50 kilograms of cocaine from the gang.

The men ended up shooting Cartagena outside an apartment in East Chicago, killing him. Police in the area responded and a began a chase that ended when the suspects' car crashed. Henderson, who was driving, was killed.

Pennington has already pleaded guilty in the case, and Tancil and Fuentes were charged in a superseding indictment announced last week for taking part in the racketeering conspiracy of the Two Six gang and with murdering Cartagena.

Cosme was also part of the newest indictment.

A change of plea hearing for Cosme had not been set as of Thursday afternoon.
