Girl, 14, sexually assaulted in South Side alley

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - An attacker sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl during a daylight attack Thursday morning in a Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood alley.

“She was very hysterical, she was very nervous and she was just frightened. She's 14 years old and I'm small and she was smaller than I am," said Jennifer McKay, manager of Kingfish Seafood.

McKay couldn't believe what the young girl was telling her, that she was sexually assaulted in the alley right next to her business.

Police said the victim was attacked by a man riding a mountain bike around 11:45 a.m. on the 400 block of East 71st Street near King Drive. The suspect grabbed the girl, forcibly removed her pants and sexually assaulted her.

The girl then ran to Kingfish Seafood begging for someone to help her.

“I told her to sit tight and I was going to call the police for her," McKay said.

The Park Manor neighborhood is full of people during the daytime hours. Residents can't believe no one heard what was happening to the young girl.

"It's sad that something happens in a neighborhood like this. And people are out here at all times of the day, out here," said neighbor Bee Robinson.

William Jones lives just down the alley from where the attack happened. He has two children and his youngest is his daughter who's about to turn 11.

The news hits too close to home for Jones.

"It's tragic. Broad daylight and this is what people do? Kids are supposed to be able to feel safe. It's bad enough we've got kids being shot at back and forth or being victims of gun fight, out playing being kids," Jones said.

McKay said she will be extra cautious while working, knowing this person is still out there.

“My heart does go out to her and her family. I really feel for her, because the person who raped her is probably onto the next right now, but you don't understand you took something from her. And you ruined her," McKay added.

Police are still working with the victim on more details about the suspect. Neighbors are trying their best now to be more alert, so this doesn't happen again.

The suspect is thought to be between 20 and 30 years old, police said. Authorities could not yet provide a specific description of his appearance.

The girl was taken to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital for treatment, police said.

If you have any information about the attack, you're asked to call Chicago police.
