CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Ten people were arrested when police broke up what they called a gang-controlled drug market in the West Side Austin neighborhood.

Police from Chicago and west suburban Cicero conducted the joint investigation, which centered on drug sales near Roosevelt Road and Austin Boulevard, a statement from Chicago Police said.

Authorities claim the Travelling Vice Lords street gang controls drug sales in that area, and recent incidents of violence nearby have been linked to gang and drug activity.

During the investigation, police made several controlled purchases, all within 1,000 feet of a school, the statement said.

Twelve suspects were identified during the investigation, the majority of whom are documented gang members, police claim. Ten have been arrested and face various drug-related charges. Two more are being sought by police.

Police recovered heroin, crack cocaine and a handgun when executing a search warrant, the statement said.
