Will Snyder's record cost him or help him?

Posted: Updated:
You could make the case that Gov. Rick Snyder has led a charmed political life at the ballot box. He's run in only two elections and won them both.

But Democrats are quick to point out, nobody knew who this guy was when he ran the first time and they sheepishly concede a bunch of Democrats actually voted for him.

The Democrats are hoping that those wayward Democrats have figured out who he is, there is no way they will plunk for him in November, so the reasoning goes.

The bad thing about running as an incumbent and not a neo-phyte is that you do have a record and Mr. Snyder has done lots of stuff to offend just about everyone depending on the issue. By the same token his record is not totally anti-D which gives the conservatives fits.

The ultra right-wingers and segments of the TEA Party movement don't much like his chatter about raising taxes for the roads, or his support of the Common Core circulum not to mention his unrelenting support of expanding the state Medicaid system to include upwards of 500,000 uninsued residents.

Ironically, Democrats generally support all of those, but is that enough to get them into the Snyder column again?

If you believe the D party line, the answer is a resounding no. Start with the "attacks on female rights", even though the governor vetoed a Right to Life anti-abortion bill. Then toss in the undercutting of union power starting with right to work and the elimination of dues collections by school districts.  And the old standbys cuts to education and huge tax breaks for wealthy corporations are not exactly part of the Democratic platform.

Yet the governor circumvented the GOP naysayers in the legislature to potentially build a new bridge with thousands of union jobs hanging in the balance and he stepped in to save the city of Detroit from itself even though D's never much liked the Emergency Manager method of getting there. But even his opponent says he probably would have done the same thing.

So his record as contemplated by both R's and D's is a series of zigs and zags and depending on which side of the bed voters get out of on election day, the Snyder record could cost him the election or provide him four more years.
