ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) -  Tom Gennety's sewage soaked garbage pile in Royal Oak has been here for much longer than he ever would have imagined or liked.

That's why the second that crews pulled up, he came out to give them some help

"I had about 15 or 16 inches of sewage that came up through the basement," he said. "I had a finished basement, so that did a lot of damage to the drywall. Carpet, furniture, electronics, all that stuff."

Since August 12, garbage crews have hauled away more than 3,000  tons of trash in Royal Oak alone - which is nearly two months worth in just a matter of days.

"It stinks, it's been hot, it smells really bad," said Chelsea Tischler, also a Royal Oak resident. "I'm concerned about rats, fleas i don't know how long it it takes before that stuff comes. I just want it to go away. I have a 2-year-old daughter and we don't want her playing out here until it's gone."

Although it has been almost two weeks since the record rain, many are still cleaning up and drying out. The health department recommends using masks to protect you from breathing in mold and particles, and to get your shots.

George Miller, director of department of health and human services said that they have encouraged people who are cleaning out basements to get Hepatitis A shots and tetanus boosters.

"I know cleaning in out my daughters basement," Miller said. "if you get scratched and poked by the nails and stuff you are pulling out, you want to make sure those are up to date."

Nearly 3,000 showed up at several flood resource centers held in Oakland County this week. The majority of them went right to the health experts, to make sure their homes and families were safe.
