Weekend construction to affect Blue, Green lines

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Construction will suspend “L” service this weekend on parts of the CTA's Green and Blue lines – the latter to wrap up track improvements as part of the $492 million Your New Blue project.

Trains will not run between the Damen and Logan Square stations from 10 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Monday, the CTA said in a statement. It will be the final weekend of track work for the modernization project on the O'Hare branch of the Blue Line.

Free shuttle buses will take passengers to the Damen, Western, California and Logan Square stations, the CTA said. Passengers continuing past those stations will not be charged for transfers back onto Blue Line trains.

Disabled customers can take shuttles to the closest accessible station – either Logan Square or Clark/Lake, depending on the direction of travel, according to the CTA.

All passengers on the O'Hare Branch of the Blue Line should allow at least 20 extra minutes of travel time this weekend.

The second phase of the Your New Blue involves station renewal work, beginning Sept. 4 at the California station and lasting for 42 days. The Damen station will be closed for similar work for 63 days, starting Oct. 20. The Western station will remain open as crews work on smaller-scale upgrades.

On the South Side, Green Line service will be suspended until 11:40 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday between the Roosevelt and 35th-Bronzville-IIT stations, the CTA said. The closure will allow crews to work on the new Cermak-McCormick Place station – a $50 million project that fills what the CTA calls a “major gap in service.”

A free bus shuttle and free transfers will be available for customers, and riders should allow extra travel time. A similar closure is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 6 and 7.
