The U.S. Congress is not in Lansing

Posted: Updated:
There is an endless debate regarding the intellectual prowess of the electorate or lack of same.

On one hand it apparently did not do its due diligence on Proposal One as many are now lamenting, Geez, I would have voted "no" had I known this was so bad. That's a sure sign of laziness and unwillingness to dive deep into the grass to understand the implications of a complex plan.

Yet in Oakland County, a local senator is singing the phrases of his voters who returned him to office, (no wonder he thinks they are smart) by not getting sucked-in by a phony attack ad.

The senator is Mike Kowall who spent most of the summer with a TEA party bullseye on his back. That wing of his party was out to end his distinguished career and it sought to do it with one commercial.

"Mike Kowall voted for Obamacare."

All right. It's not an original attack but it surely would resonate with voters, many of whom are fed up with Obamacare and its author.

Yet Mr. Kowall won by 1,700 votes.

Explain.

He didn't vote for Obamacare. He voted for Gov. Snyder's expansion of Medicaid which was an off-shoot of the national health care program but that didn't seem to bother his opponents. Don't let the facts get in the way of a distorted hit piece.

"We have intelligent voters in Oakland County. They understood the difference," a relieved Mr. Kowall explains as he pins the other side for "not telling the truth."

The reason he knew he was going to dodge the Obama-scare bullet was because citizens would call him with this:  "Mike. We knew you were good but we didn't know you could vote for federal legislation."

He couldn't, of course, because he serves in Lansing and not the U.S. Congress and apparently his supporters knew the difference. Good for him or he might be looking for work.

Which is pretty interesting because you would be amazed at the number of folks who come up to a certain capitol correspondent with this inquiry: How do you like covering Congress?

Answer: I don't know because I don't cover Congress.

You mean the Congress is not in Lansing?

That be true. Didn't you know they moved it to D.C. years ago?
