CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Criminals and gang members in Chicago may want to have eyes on the back of their heads starting Thursday. A published report has the FBI dispatching 65 agents to high-crime areas in Chicago in an effort to combat street gang activity.

The agents, working with the Chicago Police Department, will be assigned to gang suppression. The FBI plans to develop intelligence and conduct surveillance on street-corner drug dealers. The expectation is it will lead to arrests and the seizure of guns.

The move by the FBI comes in the wake of the assignment by Gov. Pat Quinn of 40 Illinois state troopers to Chicago to work with police in going after suspects wanted on fugitive warrants. It is the first time officials have taken this kind of offensive action to combat crime in the city.

"When you blend the talents of the Illinois State Police with the tremendous amounts of talents of the Chicago Police Department, you cannot go wrong. Our men and women will do a terrific job and I am very confident in that," ISP director Hiram Grau said.

Seven additional U.S. Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents were assigned to Chicago last month to help reduce gun violence.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
