3 Frederick Douglass students detained for having gun

ATLANTA -

Frederick Douglass High School was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning after a gun was found on campus.

According to Atlanta Police Department spokesperson Gregory Lyon, the police were called to the school around 11:30 a.m. after school officials received the report. Police said no one was injured.

According to police, officers immediately began searching for the student and handgun. They were able to locate and detain three students.

Parents were notified by email and phone of the incident.

Just before 3:00 p.m., Principal Dr. Tony Burks III, made the announcement over the intercom system that the campus was released from lockdown status.

Schools officials state that all students, faculty and staff are safe.

Police say they later found the handgun located on school grounds. 

The three students were taken to the Fulton County Youth Detention Center. Names of the students have not been released.
