Dangerous swimming conditions expected at area beaches Tuesday

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The National Weather Service is advising beachgoers to stay out of the water Tuesday as high waves and strong currents are expected to create dangerous swimming conditions at Lake Michigan beaches.

The beach hazard advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. Tuesday until late Tuesday night for Lake and Cook counties in Illinois, according to the weather service. The advisory is in effect until Wednesday morning for northwest Indiana.

Strong rip currents, structural currents and waves ranging from 4-9 feet will make swimming dangerous and potentially life-threatening, the weather service said.

A swim advisory is in effect Tuesday at all Chicago beaches except Humboldt Beach, according to the Chicago Park District's website.

Additionally, the water is closed at all beaches in north suburban Evanston due to the advisory, according to a statement from the city.

The powerful currents can quickly sweep swimmers into deeper water, and high waves can tire even strong swimmers in a short time, according to the weather service.
