Police ask FOX 5 viewers to help find DeKalb travel agent

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

A travel agent now better known for canceling trips than making vacation memories has a warrant out for his arrest. And this is where our viewers come in. DeKalb County police need your help to bring in Lee Benton.

Det. Jacqueline Robinson of the DeKalb Co. Police Department said, "We are out there looking for him, but so far we haven't had any luck. We are looking for him."

State investigators say Lee Benton of Benton Group Travel takes money from clients, cancels the trips then pockets the cash.

Just ask a Forsyth County Girl Scout troop who saved for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Disney World - that never happened.

"We felt like we wanted to cry."

And Covington church ladies claim they paid Mr. Benton for a religious get-away. It didn't happen either.

DeKalb PD is looking into those cases, but it's a ruined family reunion that has police pressing charges.

"Well, we think, it's alleged that he's taken at least $20,000 from a particular family and said that he was going to pay for a trip for them. He never provided the trip nor did he give them a refund," said the detective.

The Gordon family drove in from Nashville to tell the Fox 5 I-Team about their Caribbean cruise plans that - you guessed it - didn't happen. They said they planned a year out, but just two weeks before their trip, the cruise line gave them surprising news.

"They told us that he canceled the cruise in May, and basically, that only a percentage of the money had been sent to the cruise," said a frustrated Marsha' Gordon.

Detective Robinson said that Lee Benton is a name that is not new to the department.

"His name has come through here a few times before."

Detective Robinson says the complaints are very similar, but Lee Benton has always managed to pay back folks in the nick of time. But now, his repeated bad business practices may finally be his undoing. The attorney general's office has re-opened its case against him. The Better Business Bureau has issued an alert warning people about Benton Group Travel

Police say it's time to bring him in. If you know anything about where to find Lee Benton, please give them a call.

"They can contact me any time here at South Precinct and I would love to hear from them."

Here's the number: 404-286-7990. Ask for Detective Robinson.
