(WJBK) - U.S. Representative John Dingell is retiring, ending the longest career in the history of the United States Congress. His wife is hoping to take his place.

Debbie Dingell is the winner of the Democratic nomination for the 12th Congressional District. She defeated attorney Raymond Mullins Tuesday and heads into the November general election seeking the seat her husband has held for more than 58 years.

The 60-year-old Debbie Dingell is chair of the Wayne State University Board of Governors and member of the Democratic National Committee.

The 12th Congressional District includes Ann Arbor, Dearborn and a number of Downriver Detroit communities.
