Police: Officer fired at man fleeing scene of fatal shooting near nightclub

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Chicago Police shot at – but did not wound – a man they saw running away from a fatal shooting near a nightclub on the Near Northside early Sunday.

The fatal shooting occurred on the block of the nightclub Bodi, 873 N. Orleans St. The rapper Nas was scheduled to host a party at the club following his Saturday Lollapalooza performance, according to the club’s website.

Police said officers were on patrol in the area about 3:50 a.m. when they heard gunshots. Officers tried to “engage” a man who was fleeing scene, but failed to stop him, according to a police spokeswoman. An officer fired his gun at the man, but did not hit him, police said.

One man, 32, was found in a nearby alley with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, police said. The man, whose name has not been released by authorities, was declared dead at the scene at about 4:15 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. His name was not released early Sunday.

Meanwhile, outside the club, a 21-year old man was shot in the chest. He remains in serious condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said.

Police refused to provide further information about the shooting. It is unclear if the shooting stems from an incident that occurred in the club.

A representative of the club could not immediately be reached for comment Sunday morning.

A spokesman for the Independent Police Review Authority, which usually investigates police shootings, said the agency is not conducting an investigation of the officer’s use of force because he did not strike the man he fired at, the Sun-Times is reporting.

Another Lollapalooza performer, Big Boi of the duo Outkast, also played in the neighborhood Saturday night. He performed at Parliament nightclub, on Chicago Avenue near Orleans, about a block south of Bodi.

From the stage at Lollapalooza, Big Boi had lamented recent violent incidents at Lollapalooza and in the city, declaring:

“I know there’s been some trouble in Chicago — gotta put those guns down and crunk with some herb.”
