MAYWOOD, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Cook County Sheriff’s officer fired his gun during a chase on the Eisenhower Expressway early Sunday in west suburban Maywood.

Cook County Sheriff’s officers came across a two-car crash on westbound I-290 east of First Avenue about 2 a.m., according to sheriff’s office spokeswoman Sophia Ansari.

The officers stopped to check for injuries and a “good Samaritan” told them that one of the people had a gun, Ansari said.

The reportedly armed person ran off and the officers gave chase, Ansari said. One of the officers fired a shot, but did not strike the person.

The suspect was taken into custody and is being treated for injuries from the crash, Ansari said.

The crash remains under investigation.
