Lolla revelers brace for storms, hope history won't repeat itself

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

People had to pull out their umbrellas Friday afternoon and don their ponchos after a rain storm rolled through downtown getting people wet and kindling a few reminders of the big storm two years ago.

"We were all watching at this stage, I believe, and we remember an announcement being made over the loud-system saying they were evacuating the park and we sorta just high tailed it back to our hotel," recalled Kendall Kessler from St. Louis.

Time lapse video from that day showed the major storm, which rolled in with thunder and lightening and high winds, dumping heavy rain on the festival grounds. People scurried for cover in parking garages and under any available awning on Michigan Avenue.

"When we had to evacuate, we went to a downstairs parking garage so that was pretty terrible. This year I feel like they have it under control already, they put down sand, so even if it rains I feel like they're gonna have it under control," said Kyle Pettit from Downers Grove.

The office of Emergency Management along with the Lollapalooza producers have improved evacuation plans with parking garages just outside Grant Park marked as storm shelters, all just in case.

But as the clouds cleared and the concerts began cranking up the music, there was a surplus of smiles.

And the worries about the weather were drowned out by the magic of the music.

"This weekend it's supposed to be beautiful," said Valerie Kessler, from St. Louis, brushing off the brief rain earlier. "Two out of three ain't bad right?"

And Chicagoan Rashida Bradley summed up how many other concert-goers felt.

"Honestly I just want to make sure I have the best time possible, there is no concern, you're at Lolla, you're in Chicago, this is the best city in the world, there is no concerns, have fun."
