MINNETONKA BEACH, Minn. (KMSP) -

Police say it probably was an accident, but a Minnesota man is in jail and may be charged with criminal vehicular homicide after he ran over his wife in the lakefront community of Minnetonka Beach.

It's still not clear what happened in the ritzy Lake Minnetonka neighborhood, but police confirmed Sunday that 57-year-old Diane Rawlings-Meder died after the crash in the family's driveway.

The small peninsula is officially called the City of the Village of Minnetonka Beach, but residents just know it as "the Beach." The population is under 1,000, and many want to know what happened on Arcola Lane.

Those who were at the home on Sunday afternoon weren't willing to talk about the incident. Police have said David Meder was driving when he struck his wife and ran her over about 15 feet down the driveway. A medical examiner found Diane Meder died of "multiple blunt force injuries."

Orono police are currently leading the investigation. The chief told Fox 9 News he appears to be an accident, but why would that put David Meder behind bars? A neighbor told Fox 9 News that investigators explained that he may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Investigators still have not interviewed all witnesses to the ordeal, and it will be up to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office to determine whether charges will be filed. Under Minnesota law, the state's drunk driving laws still apply on private family driveways.
