ALBUQUERQUE, NM- A disturbing tale of animal cruelty in New Mexico.
A man kills the family dog, and claims he did it because the family didn't have enough food to eat.
Police in Albuquerque, New Mexico were responding to an anonymous tip of suspicious behavior when they discovered horrific find.
A woman at the home told deputies her boyfriend, Salvador Martinez killed their nine-month old black and white Chiweenie, named Onyx.
When deputies questioned Martinez, he freely admitted to the crime and claimed he did it because there wasn't enough food in the house.
Police say Martinez killed the dog with a screwdriver, skinned him and then placed his body in the freezer.
He then went online to look up dog meat recipes.
But his girlfriend says there was plenty of food in the house.
Torrance County Sheriff, Heath White, says it's legal to eat dogs in New Mexico, but the way Martinez killed the dog was completely illegal.
"It is extremely disturbing to know that someone would be that brutal with a family animal," said White.
Martinez is now facing charges of extreme animal cruelty a fourth degree felony charge, and child abuse charges for allowing children to be present during the murder of their family pet.
Police are also holding Martinez in federal custody for violating his probation.
In 2003 he was arrested for driving across the border with nearly thirteen kilos of cocaine and was sentences to ten years in prison .
