Out and About: Goldfish Swim School

Posted: Updated:
(myFOXDetroit.com) - Playing in the water is a great way to beat the heat. And yet every year, kids drown.

The good news is that the rate of accidental drowning has decreased in recent decades. This trend may reflect the more widespread adoption of preventive strategies such as pool fencing and swimming lessons.

Parent-and-baby classes offer the opportunity for parents to hear water safety messages that may help protect their children. Fox 2's Jessica Starr took her son Noah out and about to check out the Goldfish Swim School.

Chris and Jenny McCuiston started the school in 2006 with one simple goal -- teaching kids to swim. "We were the first swim school in the state of Michigan to open up that was dedicated entirely to the learn to swim atmosphere," Chris McCuiston explains. "We didn't have aerobics or the gym to go too, or basketball court to go too. We wanted to focus solely on the learn to swim experience for infants and children."

The Goldfish pool is always kept at 90 degrees, so no more shivering in cold water.

The pool is never more than four and a half feet deep, and the classes are designed with a student-teacher ratio of four to one.

There are now seven Goldfish Swim Schools in Michigan and the program is expanding to other states.

Goldfish instructors work with kids at every level, from beginners to kids looking to swim competitively and improve their strokes.

McCuiston credits the program's core values and its certified instructors for their success. "There have been studies that show that formal swim lessons or perpetual swim lessons reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent in children -- which is a huge number. What we are focusing on first and foremost is safer children in the pool."
