NWS warns of dangerous swimming conditions

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

For those considering braving the unusually cool temperatures and cold lake water, the National Weather Service is warning of dangerous swimming conditions at city beaches.

Though all of Chicago Park District beaches remain open Wednesday, wave heights in Lake Michigan could reach 7-11 feet, according to a beach hazard statement from the weather service.

Strong rip currents are also possible, the weather service warns.

The statement remains in effect through Thursday morning, when temperatures are expected to be in the lower 70s with mostly sunny skies, according to the weather service.

A small craft advisory expired at 10 a.m. Thursday.
