Ill. Supreme Court won't hear term limits appeal

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

The Illinois Supreme Court won't review a lower court ruling barring a question on lawmaker term limits from appearing on November's ballot.

The court denied the Committee for Legislative Reform and Term Limits' appeal of Cook County Circuit Court Judge Mary Mikva's June 27 ruling Thursday. Mikva had decided the measure - along with another on a new system for drawing political boundaries - didn't meet constitutional requirements and ruled them invalid.

A lawsuit challenging the measures was filed by an attorney for top Democratic lawmakers.

The decision could be a setback for Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner (ROW'-nur). The Winnetka businessman is trying to unseat Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn in what is one of the most competitive governor's races nationwide. Rauner has made term limits a campaign cornerstone.
