Quincy mother pleads not guilty to locking up son

Posted: Updated:

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) - A western Illinois woman accused of locking her 5-year-old son in their basement has pleaded not guilty.

Twenty-six-year-old Tricia Franklin of Quincy entered the not guilty plea Wednesday to an Adams County charge of unlawful restraint.

Franklin was arrested in April after Quincy police found the boy in Franklin's basement. Authorities say he was the only one home at the time. Officers were responding to a neighbor's report of hearing a child yelling for help. The child was turned over to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

Franklin has been found mentally fit to stand trial, which is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 8.

Franklin remains jailed on $20,000 bond.
