No charges after missing Wis. toddler found dead in trunk

CENTURIA, Wis. (KMSP) -

Polk County district attorney Daniel Steffen confirmed Wednesday that there will be no criminal charges filed in the death of a Centuria, Wis. 2-year-old who overheated in the trunk of a car last July. Police said he had the keys with him and likely died shortly after he went missing.

Over 26 hours passed once Isaiah Theis was reported missing. Dozens of searchers scoured a two-mile radius around his home, only to discover he was inside the trunk of the Chevy Impala his father was repairing outside the house.

The initial investigation indicated the Chevy Impala had been searched, and the area around the vehicle had been searched several times. However, searchers were reportedly told the vehicle had been locked before the toddler went missing and that it was highly unlikely that he was inside.

In a news release, Steffen said he's confident the Polk County sheriff's office did an extensive and thorough investigation, and along with the assistance of the FBI, Department of Criminal Investigations and the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory, "Isaiah's death was a tragic accident and that no intent or recklessness was present to cause the death. Numerous forensic tests were conducted and re-creations of the event of that day all point to the same conclusion that this was an accident."
