Archdiocese of Chicago wants to help border children

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) - Cardinal Francis George says the Archdiocese of Chicago wants to help care for the thousands of immigrant children gathering at the U.S. border with Mexico.

George tells the Chicago Sun-Times that the archdiocese is asking the federal government for permission to feed and provide temporary housing for the children. George says the children are "in danger and without adequate shelter." He says there should be "a compassionate and merciful response."

The cardinal's spokeswoman says the archdiocese will find out after Aug. 6 if the U.S. Health and Human Services Department will let them help.

The Border Patrol says 57,525 unaccompanied children have been apprehended at the border in recent months.

The 77-year-old George is the spiritual leader of the Chicago area's more than 2 million Roman Catholics.
