Neighbors in St. Clair Shores call for tougher firework laws after garage fire

Posted: Updated:
ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (WJBK) - Explosives are believed to have started a fire at a garage in Saint Clair shores. Now, neighbors are calling for tougher enforcement of firework laws and stricter laws in the long run.

"Reality has set in today. I just look at this and earlier today I was crying," says homeowner Christina Valenti. The tears may have stopped since her garage went up in flames Sunday but the fireworks have not.

"We haven't slept in two days. It's hard to fall asleep when you hear fireworks going off again and you don't know, well is it going to hit our house tonight?" she says. "We need to pass a law that says no fireworks in residential areas."

The fire destroyed the Valenti's cars and their garage, and damaged their home. Neighbors' houses weren't spared either.

"I looked outside and everything was bright orange. We got the heck out of there in a real hurry," says neighbor Herb Hackenberg.

This fire affected a lot more people than just the Valentis and their immediate neighbors. It knocked out phone service for more than 600 AT&T customers. The company is working to get them back online now.

The Valentis are counting their blessings. Had they not bought a sturdier garage door last year the fire would have been much worse.

"It helped keep it contained there versus blowing out and then having flames shooting out of the garage towards the house," says Brian Valenti.

The Valenti's young daughters were in the house during the fire. No one was hurt.

The St. Clair Shores fire marshal has not determined the cause of the fire but a mortar-like firecracker could be to blame.
