Borrower Help Center opens in Detroit

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -  Help is on the way for Detroiters on the verge of losing their homes.

"The strides that Detroit has been making, with its government working together, with its citizens working together, it's just absolutely phenomenal and quite frankly Freddie Mac wanted to be a part of this," says Ray Carlisle, president of the NID Housing Counseling Agency.

And on Monday it's commitment to Detroit became tangible with the ribbon cutting of a new borrower help center.

"This is another step in the right direction of making it easier for people to understand what you can do to get help if you're under water on your mortgage," says Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

The partnership between Freddie Mac and what's known as the NID Housing Counseling Agency means those who come to this office at 16835 Livernois Ave. will get to talk to people who know exactly what they are going through. They get the foreclosure process and how to get out of one.

"The strength of this city is in the neighborhoods, and while a lot of good things are happening downtown and in midtown, and it will continue to happen, if the neighborhoods in this city are not strong this city will not be strong," says Harvey Hollins of the Governor's Office of Urban and Metropolitan Initiatives.

Over the past several months major companies from near and far have started investing in Detroit.

Companies like JP Morgan Chase and of course those connected to the founder of Quicken Loans, Dan Gilbert. They are buying buildings, attracting new businesses and making a statement.

"This is the first time Freddie Mac has gone public with a help center and it's more important because it chose Detroit to do it in," says Carlisle.

And hopefully this is just the beginning of that commitment.

In 2012 national statistics show only 500 mortgages were issued in the city.

"We have got to make mortgages more accessible and I know that's not today's announcement but I'm hoping Freddie Mac will come back with an announcement to deal with access to mortgages," says Duggan.

This is the 12th help center in the nation and the only one like it in Michigan.
