BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - More than 300 mourners gathered in southern Illinois to say farewell to former U.S. Sen. Alan Dixon.
Dixon was 86 when he died July 6 at his Fairview Heights home.
The Belleville News-Democrat reports that among those who attended Dixon's funeral Monday at Lindenwood University's Belleville campus were U.S. Sen Dick Durbin and former U.S. Reps. Jerry Costello and Glenn Poshard.
A private burial for family and close friends followed at Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights.
As a Democrat, Dixon's political career spanned more than 40 years. He was in the U.S. Senate from 1981 to 1993, serving as the third-ranking Democrat. He also chaired a subcommittee of the Armed Services Committee.
