Kids set playground equipment on fire, shared images online

Posted: Updated:

Police are warning parents to monitor their kids’ social media habits after juveniles set fires at southwest suburban playgrounds, then shared the images online.

Several suspects set four separate fires to large garbage receptacles and playground equipment over the past three weeks, a statement from Plainfield police said.

All of the incidents involved juveniles, who have since been arrested and charged, police said.

In most cases, the juveniles would post photos of the fires they set to social media, which inspired other young people to copy them, according to police.

Police are urging parents to monitor their children’s social media usage, and warn them about the dangers of arson.

Parents seeking more information on social media or fire safety can call Det. Sgt. Kevin McQuaid at (815) 436-6544, or Deputy Fire Chief John Stratton at (815) 436-5335.
