Dangerous electrical box left open near populated park

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - FOX 32 News stumbled across a wide-open electrical box at Buena Circle Park in the Lakeview neighborhood while working on another story. Now, the Chicago Park District is trying to figure out who screwed up.

"I’m very surprised to see this box open," said parent Keeshahn Mohammed.

Mohammed is one of several parents at the park who said they saw work crews at the location earlier in the day. It appears somebody with keys opened the box, because two padlocks dangled that were both unlocked. On the front of the box it says, “Danger--Keep Out.”

"That’s very dangerous, because there's a lot of kids that come here that are very curious, very into things. So, I could see someone touching that and getting electrocuted,” Mohammed said.

However, getting something done proved to be a little tougher than FOX 32 originally thought. After waiting ten minutes on the phone with city officials, we hung up and called 911. As we waited for crews to arrive, the park got more and more crowded, especially when the summer school across the street let out.

"It doesn't make me very comfortable, that's for sure. This park is populated. It's a busy time of day," said parent Austa Murray.

By four o'clock, with no crews in sight, we called 911 again. About 20 minutes later, a truck from the Chicago Department of Transportation rolled up.

The city worker told FOX 32, “It was an oversight that we don’t really want to get into. Luckily, no one was hurt and luckily you called it in.

And in a matter of moments, the electrical box was secure.

The park district is investigating, but a spokesperson said that at this point they don't know who left the box open, because they don't have any records of their crews working on it.
