Fire badly damages Sandy Springs home

Posted: Updated:

Fire crews are on the scene of a Sandy Springs home that was badly damaged when a fire broke out early Thursday.

The fire happened on the 4500 block of Stella Drive, which is just north of the Chastain Park Amphitheater.

According to FOX 5 reporter Marc Teichner, the homeowner smelled smoke, looked outside and noticed one of the two decks was on fire.

Everyone in the home made it out safely, including the pets.

When fire crews arrived, the fire had spread to the attic and fire crews chose to enter the home and fight it from inside.

However, crews say the size of the home masked how big the fire actually was and firefighters were forced to retreat.

According to Battalion Chief Ronald Thomas with Sandy Springs Fire, “the heat was really intense.”

Thomas said the roof began to give way in different spots and firefighters had to leave the attic before the roof collapsed on top of them.

The fire department has not yet determined the cause of the fire, but they say it started in the back of the home.
