Police: Teens Dies Trying to Get iPhone Back From Robber

Posted: Updated:

Santa Ana, Calif.-A teenage girl from Santa Ana, California, is dead after a thief allegedly robbed her of her iPhone in broad daylight.

Police say 15-year-old Ruby Rubio was walking with her little sister on Towner Street on Saturday when a man approached her and asked for the time.

When Ruby pulled her phone out to check, the man grabbed it, and jumped into an awaiting car, according to authorities.

That’s when Ruby jumped onto the car to get her phone back, falling off and hitting her head.

"As they start to take off, our victim jumps on the trunk of the vehicle, hangs onto the antenna. The subjects drive away, serving back and forth on the street, our victim falls and strikes her head at the scene,” said Santa Ana Police Department Corporal Anthony Bertagna.

She died two days later in the hospital from her head injuries.

"She was really nice and she got along with everyone," said the victim’s friend Aileen Figueroa.

Corporal Bertaga warns the public to not hold their iPhones in their hands for people to see.  He also says that phones and gold jewelry are the two biggest things that get taken in robberies.

Ruby’s family and friends can't believe their loved one died over a phone.

"You shouldn't of done this," said Figueroa. "You broke many lives of many people that loved her."

Police say iPhone robberies in Santa Ana are happening on a daily basis, but have no suspects in custody.
