New York Public Library to lend Wi-Fi devices

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The New York Public Library is testing out an inventive new way to help more people get access to the Internet.

An estimated 3 million people live in New York City without home Internet access. The New York Public Library will soon be loaning out Wi-Fi boxes, but more private donations are needed to expand the program.

Andrew Rasiej, a longtime advocate for affordable broadband access, believes the government needs to view Internet access like any other utility.

    Pro-Palestinian activists marching along the Brooklyn Bridge got an eyeful when a giant flag banner in Palestinian colors was unfurled on the nearby Manhattan Bridge. The flag had the words "Boycott, Divest, Sanction" and was lowered from a part of the bridge near the Manhattan side Wednesday evening. Activists on the Brooklyn Bridge met its appearance with cheers.

    The Helmsley Building in Manhattan went gold Wednesday night in honor of children with cancer. The owners also plan to do the same in September for Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.Other city landmarks that will go gold next month include Times Square, the Coney Island Parachute jump, and all of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
