The city of Detroit says it won't shut off water to people with unpaid bills for the next 15 days, the latest response to a controversy that caused a large protest last week.
The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department is putting businesses on notice that it will shut off water service if they don't pay their bills.

The department is sending warning letters this week to about 200 commercial and industrial customers with accounts listed as more than 60 days overdue, including a golf business and a cemetery.

The warnings follow recent efforts by the department to crack down on residential customers who don't pay by shutting off service. The effort has prompted protests from longtime Democratic U.S. Rep. John Conyers of Detroit and others aimed at stopping the residential shutoffs.

The department on Tuesday announced a $1 million program to help low-income residents pay water bills.

The following is a list of Top 40 "Active" Commercial & Industrial Accounts that are Over 60 Days Past-Due provided by Detroit Water and Sewerage Department.

The city of Detroit says workers and retirees have approved pension cuts, a crucial step to emerging from the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. The city reported results Monday after two months of balloting ended July 11. A judge still must hold a trial to determine if Detroit's overall bankruptcy plan is fair and feasible, but support from retirees is vital.
