ATLANTA, Ga. - The new superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools will be sworn into office in a Monday afternoon ceremony.

The Atlanta Board of Education hired Dr. Meria Carstarphen to improve the district's image following the CRCT testing scandal that made national news in 2011.

The new superintendent comes to the district from Austin, Texas.

Carstarphen says one of her first priorities is to improve the district’s graduation rates.

According to crews on the scene, Carstarphen started by saying it was hard for her to fall asleep because she was so excited to get to work and get started. She says she met with staff members to talk about their hopes and expectations upon arrival.

The new superintendent also spoke about her leadership philosophy and says she spent most her day at Therrell High School.

She signed a three year contract and will be a paid a salary of over $300,000 per year.

The swearing-in ceremony takes place Monday afternoon at the APS Central Office.
