Severely injured boy, 8, teaches kids about safe biking

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A little boy recovered miraculously from a horrible bike accident and now the 8-year-old wants to keep other children safe.

Cody would usually be riding his bike with his family and friends.

"Being in the hospital is not fun," said Cody.

However, since he can’t ride his bike, he's watching over all of the kids in his neighborhood to make sure they have fun; as long as they're wearing a helmet.

"If you know Cody you know that he's special," said Colleen Ziemkowski, Cody's mother.

Cody isn’t even in the 4th grade and just like a super hero, he's already fought for his life and now he's fighting for a cause.

"I want to encourage people to wear helmets, so then they don't end up in the hospital like me," Cody added.

He had to learn the hard way, after taking a serious fall on his bike without a helmet.

"I had to have brain surgery. I had a brain bleed, I fractured my skull and a broken neck and broken nose," Cody said.

While he's recovering, he wants to make sure the word gets out and that everyone can get a helmet.

"One person said ‘well helmets are so expensive,’ and he asked the store manager for a stack of coupons and that was his goal," Colleen added.

So far, more than 220 people have reached out to Cody through social media showing off their new helmets. He and his family hope to reach hundreds more.

"It makes me feel special because that means that they're listening and being safe," said Cody.

More than 300,000 kids a year go to the emergency room because of bicycle injuries. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration said that 70 percent are because of head injuries that could have been prevented.

For every shooting on Chicago’s streets, there are role models trying to make the neighborhoods safe for kids. Some kids join boxing clubs, and the safety and discipline they find there makes a difference.

It's been months since the last snowflake fell, but Chicago residents are still hitting potholes that make your teeth chatter. Which is why one Southside resident was puzzled when construction crews began repaving a road that virtually no one uses.
