'Sextortion' on the rise?

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Children, increasingly, are being targeted in a dangerous online crime.

It's called ‘sextortion.’

USA Today reports that seven-thousand cases a year are reported to police nationwide. That's a 32-percent increase over three years.

Men pose as kids online and coax victims, typically young girls, into taking off their clothes or sending naked photos. The men then threaten to post the images online unless the girls send more naked photos, or do other things.

A famous case in Canada led to the suicide of a 15-year-old who had been tormented by an online extortionist.

It happens in our area as well. The Police Tech Crime Unit in Naperville said that it gets one to two reports of ‘sextortion’ per week.

The detective said that it's happened to kids as young as eight. He said parents need to install the right technology on children’s' devices to prevent this from happening.
