Michigan legislature needs to listen to the people to fix the roads

Just before the Michigan legislature adjourned for the summer, I called on our state lawmakers to reach a consensus and pass a major road bill before going home to their districts.

I emphasized that our road system is at a crisis point and without a deal, there would be long-term problems attracting business and investment to our communities.

But judging from many of the responses from our viewers, it's easy to see why the legislature is tip-toeing on an expensive road bill … they are afraid of angry and impatient voters. Many comments said no to new taxes and blasted lawmakers for playing politics and not listening to their constituents.

Edward Darga said on Facebook, "Just use the money they have already. Hire people who can do the work and will warranty their work. A lot of Michigan roads are repaired then three years later are falling apart."

Bill Bruce wrote, "Let's start reducing the number of legislators and make them part time so the people of Michigan can start putting the money into needed projects. Lawmakers in Lansing need to feel the pain like the citizens of Michigan."

And John Mastrengel said, "Nope - not buying it."

Many polls have shown the same thing … folks in Michigan want something done and done quickly but they want the roads fixed without raising their taxes.

I think that's an option that needs to be closely considered. Our legislative leaders need to sit down and prioritize state expenditures and make some tough decisions instead of immediately going down the road of increased fees and taxes. A combination of decreased spending and slight increases in taxes could be considered as well.

The legislature recently missed a golden opportunity to take the bold steps necessary to institute a meaningful solution on roads. We desperately need some energy and urgency toward a resolution of this issue! The Michigan legislature needs to listen to the people!!!
