PHILADELPHIA -

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. – Hurricane Arthur strengthened into a category-two storm overnight before making landfall in North Carolina.

Arthur is the first named storm of the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season and the earliest in recorded history to make landfall in the Tar Heel state. It came ashore around 11:15 p.m. over the Outer Banks with winds of up to 100 mph and higher gusts plus a few feet of storm surge, forcing thousands of tourists and residents to evacuate.

FOX 's Michelle Macaluso joined "Good Day Philadelphia" live Friday morning from Kill Devil Hills, N.C., to show how people there are faring.

Arthur is still moving at 23 mph to the northeast, and its eye is back out over the ocean. The storm weakened back to a category-one hurricane later on Friday morning with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph.

Its bands are now bringing heavy rains and stiff winds to the Delaware and New Jersey coasts.

The storm may not make another landfall until reaching Nova Scotia. Yet the storm is fording Fourth of July plans to be scrapped right along the East Coast.

As many head down to the Jersey and Delaware shores, the hurricane is churning up the Atlantic and may make it rough for those looking to enjoy the water. Strong rip currents are a big concern.

Authorities want excited beachgoers to exercise caution. They're urging everyone to be careful, and lifeguards will be closely monitoring the waves to determine whether it's safe to be in them.
