Teetering chimney could fall on elderly woman's home

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) - An elderly Detroit woman says the abandoned home next door is putting her in danger. She says the chimney is about to fall right onto her roof and she doesn't feel safe in her home.

She says she prays every day, but if the city doesn't  tear  down an abandoned house, it'll take a miracle to keep its chimney from falling on Edith Noel's home. The house on Roselawn has been vacant for about 15 years. Mrs. Noel's adult children noticed the chimney was pulling away back in January and they say its been inching closer to their mother's home ever since. Sheila Fleming says she's called the city and a demolition crew came out about a month ago but workers did not tear down the house.

"I was letting him know that the chimney is about to fall but they just looked at it and kept going," Fleming told Fox 2. "They said it wasn't on their sheet."

That sheet was likely a portion of the city's demolition list and as of Sunday afternoon the house was not on it. Mrs. Noel hopes it will be added soon before someone gets hurt.

Fox 2 spoke with the city. A spokesperson says a City of Detroit inspector will be out at 8am Monday to take a look at the situation. Stay with Fox 2 and myfoxdetroit.com for updates.
