Man assaulted, robbed at Hammond train station

HAMMOND, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An elderly man was assaulted and robbed at a train station Thursday morning in northwest Indiana.

The attack happened at the South Shore Station at 4531 Hammond Ave. in Hammond, Ind. at 8:39 a.m., according to a release from the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District police.

The 84-year-old man had just bought a newspaper inside the station when he was assaulted and his wallet was stolen, police said.

The man suffered “minor injuries” but declined medical treatment, police said.

The suspect is described as a tall, stocky black man in his mid-20s to early-30s wearing a sleeveless gray t-shirt and dark jeans with embroidered designs sewn into the back pockets, police said. He ran south on Johnson Avenue after the robbery.

Hammond police searched the area with a K-9 unit, but the suspect was not found.
