Discovering Manhattan's side streets

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Two years ago, Betsy Bober Polivy took a walk river to river down the entirety of First Street stopping inside every single small business she passed. Since that first jaunt Betsy has continued systematically traipsing the city, crawling north, by strolling east to west.

The Manhattan Sideways project seeks to catalog every non-residential property not on an avenue from First Street to 155th Street. Neither Google nor Yelp attempts anything nearly that ambitious.

Betsy's son Evan helped mom turn her walks into a searchable website -- www.manhattansideways.com -- a resource but also a publication with a higher cause, Betsy says.

Betsy, who owned a children's bookstore for 20 years, still visits every business herself, often with one of her project's eleven interns in tow.

Her friends and family no longer bother planning their own nights out.

So far, Betsy has visited more than 8,000 boutiques and pastry shops and homemade-handmade stamp stores on Manhattan's first 44 streets.

Meanwhile, she keeps marching sideways on her journey north one storefront at a time.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
