Couple, dog rescued from pontoon boat near Algonquin dam

ALGONQUIN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A man, woman and dog were rescued from a pontoon boat that became lodged under a bridge on the Fox River in northwest suburban Algonquin on Wednesday.

While the boat was just north of the Route 62 bridge at about 12:40 p.m., it lost power and the strong current pushed Grace Leseth, her husband, Steve; and their dog, Bree, into the bridge, according to officials.

After colliding with a buoy, Steve Leseth grabbed onto a steel girder under the bridge and threw a mooring rope over it.

They Grayslake residents rescued from the boat by the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Department.

If the boat hadn’t got stuck in the bridge, it would have gone over the dam, which is a low-head dam that empties into a downstream boil, Fire Chief Pat Mullen said.

A barge removed the pontoon boat from the bridge.
