HARVEY, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Three firefighters were injured in a fire at an auto shop in south suburban Harvey Tuesday night.

The fire was reported about 9:15 p.m. at a mechanic shop at 148th Street and Loomis Avenue, Harvey spokesman Sean Howard told reporters at the scene.

Workers told authorities the blaze started as a smaller accidental fire that they were unable to contain, Howard said.

About 60 firefighters from five townships responded to the fire, Howard said. When they arrived, the entire building was engulfed in smoke and flames.

Three firefighters were taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey to be treated for smoke inhalation, Howard said. Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, and one had been released from Ingalls as of Tuesday night. Howard said the other two could be released overnight.

All workers got out of the building safely and no other injuries were reported, Howard said.

The building’s roof collapsed and the structure was damaged extensively before crews got the fire under control, Howard said. No neighboring structures were affected.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
