A 50-year-old man was driving an SUV northbound in the 5200 block of Columbia and attempted a left turn when he thought traffic was clear, according to Hammond police.

He then saw motorcycle come from behind another vehicle and change lanes “at a high rate of speed,” Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda said.

The driver of the SUV tried to stop, but ended up striking the motorcycle head-on, according to police.

The driver of the SUV was wearing a seat belt and was not hurt, according to police.
