MARTA pedestrian bridge opens in Buckhead

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. -

It's a bridge more than 20 years in the making, and on Tuesday the new Marta pedestrian bridge in Buckhead will officially open to the public. It's expected to help people get to Marta, and across Georgia-400 around Buckhead easier and Good Day Atlanta got a sneak peak.

It's been in the works since before Georgia-400 was completed in 1993 and the Buckhead community is more than ready to debut it.

"This has been a multi-decade project from conception to completion, so the fact that we're opening this bridge today is extremely exciting," says Jim Durrett, the Executive Director of the Buckhead Community Improvement District and one of Marta's Board of Directors.

$32-million dollars’ worth of funding from the Federal Transit Administration, Marta, the Buckhead CID, the City of Atlanta and State Roads and Toll Authority eventually made it possible.

"All the stars have finally aligned, we had all the funding pulled together and it was time to get it done," adds Durrett.

The bridge will serve as a northern entrance to the Buckhead Marta station, giving many who live, work and play here a much easier connection.

"As Buckhead continues to develop and more and more people chose to live here, as well as work here, having good accessibility and good connectivity is what makes a good urban environment function," Durrett says.

It will also allow people living in Buckhead to walk from Stratford Road, over Georgia-400, to Tower Place Drive.

"You don't have to pay a Marta fare in order to use the bridge, but you will have to pay a Marta fare to use the train," explains Durrett.

After more than two years of construction, Georgia-400 drivers should also expect less congestion through the Buckhead corridor.

"This project has gone pretty well considering it was an active construction zone over Georgia-400 and an operating Marta rail line and service was really not interrupting during all of the construction period. So it's quite remarkable that we're able to get this done," Durrett applauds.

The goal was to have the bridge complete and open by the 4th of July for the Peachtree Road Race and the Lenox Fireworks.
