Alderman calls for light pole sensor hearing

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - A city alderman is calling for a hearing to allow researchers to install data-collection sensors on Chicago light poles.

The smart lamps would measure air quality, sound volume, and count the number of people in the area by using mobile wireless signals.

Critics of the deal believe Mayor Rahm Emanuel should have received city council's approval before moving forward.

The first sensors will go up next month at eight Michigan Avenue intersections. A few more would then be installed around the Loop, before expanding into neighborhoods next year.
