Riverwalk project closes Dearborn Street Bridge starting Tuesday

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The Dearborn Bridge over the Chicago River downtown will be closed for nearly a week starting Tuesday as crews build a walkway as part of the Chicago Riverwalk project.

The project will ultimately create a continuous pedestrian pathway on the south bank of the main branch of the Chicago River, from State Street to Lake Street, according to a statement from the Chicago Department of Transportation.

During the six-day closure, all vehicles including CTA buses will be detoured west on Wacker Drive, north on LaSalle Street and east on Illinois Street to Dearborn, the department said.

Bicycles traveling northbound on Dearborn can access an alternate route east on Lake Street, north on State Street, west on Kinzie Street then back to Dearborn. Bikes heading southbound can detour west on Kinzie Street, south on Clark Street, then return to Dearborn through Lake Street.

A similar closure will impact the State Street Bridge sometime in mid-July, the department said. The construction requires the bridges to be lifted for a period of several days each.

The bridges over the river will create a borderline between each Riverwalk block, each planned to have a unique identity and landscaping, the department said.
