Detroiter Truck Stop evacuated for nearby fuel leak

Posted: Updated:
WOODHAVEN, Mich. (WJBK) - Crews in Woodhaven are responding to a Hazmat situation that's forced the evacuation of the Detroiter Truck Stop.
Emergency crews in the area tell Fox 2 there is a leak in a tank at the Buckeye Tank Farm.

More than one thousand gallons of gasoline leaked at the plant but the fire chief tells Fox 2's Maurielle Lue Woodhaven residents are not in any danger.

Monday morning, at approximately 11:30, Woodhaven police and fire jumped into action, responding to a call for what officials called a very bad spill at Michigan Fuel located inside the Buckeye Tank Farm.

"The tanker, whose float had stuck during a repair and deposited 1,500 gallons of gasoline within in a garage. We came in, we immediately laid down foam and called in every team possible to mitigate this," says Woodhaven Fire Chief Janet R. Sikes.

The plant was evacuated just as a safety precaution.

EPA and Hazmat stood by measuring atmospheric fuel levels, which they say never became a point of concern or put residents in danger, despite evacuating a nearby truck stop.

"We have evacuated the truck stop because it is within the 1,000 feet clearance, primarily because behind the garage there is a 4 million gallon tank of gasoline that we're concerned about. If anything was to happen within the garage, it's that 4 million gallons that we're concerned about," says Sikes.

That large tank is only 100 feet away from the spill.

Crews expect to have this mess cleaned up before 10:00 p.m.
