CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Thousands of people with an appetite for helping the hungry will be proving their passion on the pavement Saturday morning. It’s the 29th annual Hunger Walk, which raises money for food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters across Cook County.

Longtime volunteer Lillie Dawson wasn’t missing a chance to corral walkers as she served meals at Grant Memorial Church, where she coordinates the soup kitchen and food pantry.

“You going on the Hunger Walk?” Dawson asked of one food clients as he left after enjoying a hot lunch.

“Yes maam,” he replied

Dawson is passionate about what she does and who she serves, the hungry in Bronzeville who come to the Grant Memorial Church every Tuesday for a good hot meal.

“There's some room for some more in here, tell them to come on,” Dawson calls to one of the volunteers.

Dawson, 70, started volunteering here 14 years ago as a way to deal with the death of her son. She's been the coordinator of the program for the past six years, helping serve more than 100 people a week.

“It makes me feel good that they come here for help, and we can provide them with help. It makes me feel good. I have a good heart and a lady told me last week that she was so glad that we were here. She needed food and the little check she was getting, she couldn't buy food that she needed for her family,” Dawson said.

The Grant Memorial Church pantry and kitchen partners with the Greater Chicago Food Depository to provide the food.

“They’ve been a tremendous resource for this community, been anchor in this community and they’ve been here when their neighbors have needed them the most,” said Jim Conwell, the Director of Communications for the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Dawson does more than just serve food here, she's also a cheerleader for Saturday's Hunger walk.

“You going on the Hunger Walk with us?” she calls to another client as he leaves.

About 100 volunteers and food clients at the church have signed up to participate. Among them longtime kitchen volunteer Mildred Scoggins.

“This will be my third year (on the walk) and it's been great to see all the people out there for this cause,” Scoggins said.

The 5k Hunger Walk is more than just a fundraiser for The Greater Chicago Food Depository, and its partner agencies.

“It's also a chance for thousands of people, we hope 15-thousand people to come together at once and say no one should go hungry in our community,” said Conwell.

To that end, the church does more than just serve weekly meals. It also has a food pantry, giving out bags of food to sustain families for a week. Dawson considers this volunteer position her calling. When asked how many more years she thought she would keep working at the Pantry, she laughed.

“I hope until the good Lord calls me home,” she said, “Still going strong.”
