Beware: big delays are expected this weekend on the Kennedy Expressway.
“It’s just tying up a lot of traffic and making things a lot more difficult to get places on time so hopefully it wraps up soon,” said Kate Warmels, a commuter.
Kate Warmels works at the Trump Club just steps away from where drivers will be forced to detour this weekend at Eastbound Ohio Street to Orleans Street and loop back to Westbound I-90/94.
“It’s a hassle. People have to go around it. If you’re aware of what’s going on then they can prepare for it,” said Jessica Davies, a West Loop resident.
Unlike last weekend, the Illinois Department of Transportation said this weekend drivers can expect significant back-ups.
“I think people are more active in taking public transportation now, so I think they probably would,” Davies said.
Davies takes public transportation to and from work in the suburbs and said this weekend she’ll expect to see more people on the train.
“We want people to continue to listen. If you do not have to be on the Kennedy, do not be on the Kennedy. The city is open for business. There’s a lot of festivities, events, the Cubs are in town,” said Tony Quigley, an IDOT Engineer.
But for those willing to drive to the city, despite closures and anticipated traffic, the Illinois Department of Transportation said alternate routes are the answer.
“Think about alternate routes. I-294, I-355 are good ways around the city. If you’re coming from in and going to Wisconsin, take I-80 to I-39 as a good option. There’s other options as far as Metra and the CTA to get into the city this weekend also,” said Quigley.
