Trump to visit Chicago to see his sign

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Leave it to Donald Trump to pen an open letter to the Chicago Tribune criticizing critics of the new 'TRUMP' signage. And now, he says he is coming to Chicago to see his name in lights.

"Where he was saying that the controversy was going to be a good thing, something to talk about - I still think it was too big," said Vance Roby, a tourist.

In his letter, Trump defended the sign saying he started planning for the building in 2000 and that construction didn't start until 2005. He said architects built many models before deciding on the finished product.

"I love it. I'm a fan of Trump, I always have been so you won't find anything negative here," said Trina Trimble, a Chicagoan.

Trump said he received all of the necessary permits for the sign. He said if the city wants to pass laws to ban future signs, that's up to them.

"I wish they would make legislation to take down some of the alcohol or the cigarettes advertising and leave Trump alone," said Trimble.

As for the harsh words from Chicago Tribune Architect Critic Blair Kamin, Trump said he has little respect for him, even calling Kamin a lightweight.

Over the phone, Kamin told FOX 32's Tisha Lewis he's not going to get into the gutter with Donald Trump who he said has resorted to name calling and fabrication of facts.

"He sure likes seeing his name obviously," said Evelyn Dubois.

"I think he's criticizing the fact that there being critical of his name and it being gaudily put on the side of the building. We don't need to see his name on there to show that it's his building. We don't do that in Cincinnati," said Melissa Twine, a tourist from Cincinnati.

Even so, in Chicago, TRUMP the tower and sign is likely here to stay.

Trump told the Chicago Tribune he is coming to Chicago in two weeks to see the sign in person.
